Stubblefield Center

The 80,766 square-foot facility, which was built for $9.4 million, has spacious locker rooms for the Lions and Lady Lions, visitor dressing rooms, offices for coaches and support staff, a fully-equipped weight room, an Athletic Club lounge for boosters and guests, theater seating for Athletic Club members and season ticket holders, a high-tech sound system, and an overhead scoreboard with two large video screens. It has been the home of the Lions and Lady Lions basketball teams since its opening and became the home of the Lady Lions volleyball team in August of 2002. Prior to the construction of the Stubblefield Center, UAFS’ basketball teams and volleyball teams played in the UAFS Fieldhouse, which is still used as an auxiliary gym. Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center, which is one of the best arenas in the Lone Star Conference and among the best in NCAA Division II athletics, also has hosted several high school state basketball tournaments, Tournament of Champions, the annual Coca-Cola high school boys basketball tournament, and Junior Olympic volleyball tournaments. A multipurpose facility, the Stubblefield Center also has hosted science fairs, academic competitions, and concerts.

One of the newest additions to the Stubblefield Center is the Sonny Weems Film Room. The state-of-the-art film room, which is named in honor of former UAFS men's basketball player and former NBA player Sonny Weems, features black leather, theater-style seating, a projector and retractable film screen. Weems played two seasons for the Lions, including the Lions' 2006 NJCAA National Championship season and finished his collegiate playing career at the University of Arkansas. Drafted in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, Weems has played for the Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers. He's also played professionally in the EuroLeague for Zalgiris Kaunas, CSKA Moscow, and Maccabi Tel Aviv and currently plays for the Zhejiang (China) Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association.
